Japanese Garden

Japanese Garden

Suggestion, irregularity, simplicity, impermanence—a window into Japanese aesthetics.

Structured around four defining principles of Japanese aesthetics (based on Donald Keene's essay), this accordion book on Japanese gardens can be read in two directions, guided by a circular window that selectively frames the content. Punctuating alternate pages of the book, this cutout is inspired by the perfectly round Window of Enlightenment found at Unryuin Temple in Kyoto.
